Amsterdam in May 2026: Best Exhibitions, Festivals, Markets & Cultural Events

May in Amsterdam. Soft sunlight, lengthening days, and air scented with blossoms create an unmistakable sense of renewal. It is one of the most rewarding months to visit the Dutch capital: a meaningful blend of national remembrance during Liberation Day and Remembrance Day (May 4–5), a final opportunity to experience the world-famous Keukenhof gardens just before they close for the season, and a vibrant calendar of festivals, exhibitions, markets, and cultural events unfolding across the city.

Whether your passions include fine art, exceptional wines, photography, music, gastronomy, flowers, or authentic local culture, Amsterdam offers an abundance of refined and memorable experiences in May.

If you are currently planning your Spring 2026 itinerary, here is a carefully curated selection of events and exhibitions designed to make your visit to the Dutch capital truly unforgettable.

Keukenhof Gardens – The Most Beautiful Spring Garden in the World

One of the most spectacular seasonal attractions in the Netherlands, the world-famous Keukenhof Gardens opens its gates for just a short time every year.

Located about 40 minutes from Amsterdam, the gardens feature millions of blooming tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and other spring flowers, along with lakes, tree-lined paths, pavilions, and stunning floral displays.

While tulip season peaks in April, visiting in late March can actually be ideal, as the gardens are less crowded and many early spring flowers are already blooming.

2026 Opening Dates:

📅 March 19 – May 10, 2026

Best Times to Visit

From years of experience guiding visitors, the best times are:

  • Early morning (right after opening)

  • Late afternoon before closing

These times help avoid the largest tour crowds.

How to Get There

By Car

If driving, I strongly recommend purchasing tickets in advance to avoid waiting in line.

🎟️ Buy Keukenhof tickets (optional - including parking)

By Public Transport

🎟️ Buy Keukenhof entrance tickets (no transport and parking)

👉 If you're planning to explore using trains and buses, read: How to Use Public Transportation in the Netherlands

By Dedicated Shuttle (Easiest Option)

Shuttles run directly from several locations in Amsterdam and one location in Rotterdam. Seats fill quickly, so booking in advance is recommended.

Make It a Full Day Trip

Many travelers combine Keukenhof with other classic Dutch experiences such as:

• Visiting tulip farms

• A boat cruise past traditional windmills

• Exploring the historic city of Delft

In May, the Netherlands observes two national commemorations of profound historical significance and celebrates two major Christian holidays—each of which may subtly shape your experience in Amsterdam.

National Remembrance Day (Dodenherdenking)

The principal ceremony takes place at Dam Square beginning at 7:30 PM. At exactly 8:00 PM, the entire country observes two minutes of silence in memory of victims of war and acts of violence. Please note that Dam Square and its surrounding streets will be closed to traffic from the early afternoon onward, and significant congestion as well as public transportation adjustments should be expected in the city center. Most museums and attractions in Amsterdam remain open as usual; however, it is advisable to verify opening hours and any special arrangements in advance.

📅 Date: May 4, 2026

Liberation Day (Bevrijdingsdag)

Commemorating the end of the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. While most attractions operate as usual, adjusted hours are possible. Throughout the city, you’ll find open-air concerts, cultural events, and festive celebrations creating a lively, celebratory atmosphere.

📅 Date: May 5, 2026

Ascension Day

Ascension Day marks the ascension of Jesus into heaven, traditionally observed 40 days after Easter. It is an official public holiday for government employees and many others. Across the Netherlands, annual events and festivals take place, including the Breda Jazz Festival, as well as pop music festivals, street fairs, and open-air book markets.

📅 Date: May 14, 2026

Pentecost (Whit Sunday and Whit Monday)

Pentecost, known in English as Whit Sunday, commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles 50 days after Easter and marks the conclusion of the Easter season. The following day, Whit Monday, is also an official public holiday in the Netherlands.

📅 Dates: May 24–25, 2026

Good to Know:

Some Dutch schools are on spring break in early May. Combined with peak tulip season and the final weeks of the world-renowned Keukenhof gardens before they close for the season, this remains one of the busiest travel periods in the Netherlands—and in Amsterdam in particular. Advance reservations for museums, private tours, and sought-after attractions are highly recommended to ensure availability and a seamless, well-paced visit.
